How to Calculate Barometer Results: Top 2 vs. Average

Choose Top 2 Box Score or average for survey analysis in Honestly to visualize and compare employee feedback. Get clear, actionable HR insights fast.

Calculation Methods for Survey Results

When analyzing survey results within Honestly, you can select between two established calculation methods: the Top 2 Box Score and the average. Both methods provide valuable perspectives on the data, depending on your reporting goals and the nature of your survey questions.

Top 2 Box Score (T2B):

The Top 2 Box Score is a widely used approach for evaluating responses on a e.g. 5-point Likert scale. It focuses on the proportion of respondents who selected the two highest scale points, typically reflecting strong agreement or positive perception. The T2B score is calculated by summing the percentages of responses in the top two categories and dividing by the total number of answers. This gives a clear indicator of the most positive sentiment within your survey data.

This method is especially helpful for benchmarking results over time, comparing brands, or analyzing subjective topics such as concept or initiative testing. For instance, when monitoring brand perception, the T2B metric allows for direct visual comparison between your own brand and competitors across reporting periods. This streamlined score reduces complexity: instead of interpreting multiple data points, you can rely on a single figure that represents your most positive feedback.

Average Value:

Alternatively, survey results can be displayed as an average. Here, all response values are summed and then divided by the total number of respondents. This method provides a straightforward measure of overall sentiment and is familiar to most users, making it useful for quickly assessing general trends.

Configuring in Your Honestly Account:

To present your survey results using either calculation, navigate to the relevant dashboard. Click the “+” in the top right corner to add a new chart. Assign a name to the visualization and select the scaled question you wish to display. Please note that the choice between Top 2 Box Score and average is only available for questions designed with a scale.

In the third step, choose a chart type and then specify whether to calculate the results using the T2B method or as an average value. This flexibility ensures that your analytics reflect the approach best suited to your HR objectives.

By tailoring your analysis method, you gain deeper, actionable insights—supporting more informed decision-making and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within your organization.
